The Farlow City Council voted 5-2 to approve a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul at its regular meeting Tuesday. The plan addresses aging roads, utilities and public spaces across the community following extensive engineering assessments and resident input sessions.

Project Components and Funding

The initiative covers repaving 22 miles of roadways, replacing 8 miles of water and sewer mains, installing LED streetlights at 12 intersections and adding ADA-compliant sidewalks in three neighborhoods. A new stormwater management system using permeable materials will reduce flooding risks. The $14.8 million budget combines general obligation bonds, a state transportation grant and local reserves. Officials noted the phased approach will limit traffic impacts during peak hours.

Public works staff presented data showing deferred maintenance has cost residents an average of $420 annually in vehicle repairs. Council members stressed that timely upgrades will extend asset life by 25 years and support future residential growth.

Timeline and Expected Benefits

Work begins in March 2025 and concludes by late 2026, with quarterly progress reports posted online. Local contractors will receive preference in bidding to retain economic activity within Farlow. Residents can expect improved emergency response times, safer pedestrian routes and reduced utility outages. Business owners along Main Street anticipate higher foot traffic once construction ends. Additional neighborhood meetings are scheduled for January to finalize detour routes.
